Abstract
922,271. Dehairing hides and skins. ROHM & HAAS G.m.b.H. June 23, 1960, No. 22002/60. Class 76. Hides and skins are dehaired by successive treatment with water and pulverulent or pasty proteolytic enzyme products and then with sulphur-containing compounds having a reducing action. The enzyme may be proteases formed by micro-organisms and bacteria, or pancreatic tryptase, and #-glucosidase may also be added. The sulphur compounds may be sulphites, bisulphites, thiosulphates, dithionites, and thioglycollates, of which the sodium salts are preferred; or sodium sulphide or sodium hydrosulphide. They are preferably used in the presence of 30-50% of water. When a painting process is used a thickening agent such as kaolin may also be added. Cationic or non-ionic wetting agents such as ethylene oxide condensation products having 6-16 oxide units may be added to the enzymes, and non-ionic or anionic wetting agents may be added to the sulphur compounds. In examples, goat, kid and calf skins and cow hides are dehaired and in some of the solutions ammonium sulphate is also added. Specification 776,323 is referred to.
