Abstract
922,272. Dehairing hides and skins. ROHM & HAAS G.m.b.H. June 23, 1960 [June 24, 1959], No. 22003/60. Addition to 922,271. Class 76. Hides and skins are dehaired by successive treatment with water, and pulverulent or pasty proteolytic enzyme products and then with one or more neutral alkali-metal or ammonium salts. The enzymes may be proteases formed by micro-organisms and bacteria or pancreatic tryptases, and glucosidases and galactosidases may also be added. The salts may be alkalimetal and ammonium sulphates, nitrates, chlorates, chlorides, iodides and rhodanides. They are preferably used in the presence of 30-50% of water. Sodium sulphites and bisulphites may also be added to the neutral salts. Non-ionic wetting agents such as polyglycol ethers with 6-16 ethylene oxide units may be used with the enzymes and anionic wetting agents may be used with the neutral salts. In examples, goat skins and cow hides are dehaired. A pH of about 7 may be employed.
