Abstract
776,323. Enzymatic dehairing. ROHM & HAAS GES. June 21, 1955 [March 30, 1955], No. 17935/55. Class 76. Green or soaked skins are dehaired by applying a pulverulent protease composition, preferably to the flesh side, and after permitting slackening to take place, removing the hair. The skin is preferably first soaked in the presence of a bacterial protease and if desired of a carbohydrase; the skin is then sprinkled with the protease composition and after standing or tumbling in a drum for a sufficient time, e.g. at 18-20 C., it is dehaired immediately or after covering with water for a period. Subsequently the skin should be further slackened with alkaline swelling agents such as caustic alkalis or with lime and sodium sulphide as swell-limer. Specified materials are : proteases derived from mould fungi (e.g. Aspergillus parasiticus and A. flavus), or bacteria (e.g. Bacillus subtilis) or from the pancreas, preferably with the addition of a carbohydrase (which may be derived with the protease, e.g. from B. subtilis, or otherwise, e.g. from A. orycae): activating agents-reducing sulphur compounds, nitrates, nitrites: preservatives-sodium phenylphenolate: additional materials-ammoniun sulphate, sodium bisulphite, sulphite. It is stated that the invention is applicable successfully, in contradistinction to the prior art, to calf skins and fresh or dried and salted sheep skins.
