Abstract
537,712. Aliphatic acids. DREYFUS, H., and GROOMBRIDGE, W. H. Jan. 2, 1940, No. 92. [Class 2 (iii)] In the production of fatty acids from their salts by treatment of the solutions in aqueous ethyl alcohol with carbon dioxide so as to form the acid salts from which the free acids are then obtained, as described in Specification 521,202, the salt solutions are of a sufficient concentration and the carbon dioxide of sufficient pressure to produce a concentration of acid salt higher than its solubility at atmospheric temperature, so that solid acid salt is obtained by crystallization. The invention is described with reference to the treatment of sodium acetate, but other fatty acid salts such as calcium acetate may be treated. The solvent may be ethyl alcohol of 90-98 per cent. strength but other alcohols or mixtures of alcohols with other organic liquids such as benzene, paraffins and esters may be used so long as they will dissolve the salt and the necessary quantity of water. The initial salt solution may be of near saturation strength and the carbon dioxide may be at 400-800 lb. or higher pressure the operation being effected at 70-130‹ C. After separation of the sodium bicarbonate, the solution is cooled to atmospheric temperature or a little above, such as 20‹ C., when the acid acetate crystallizes out.
