Abstract

The process of Specification 642,369 is modified by salting out the acid form of penicillin at a pH of 2-4 and subsequently neutralizing the organic extract with an alkaline compound containing the appropriate cation (before or after concentrating the solution if this is found to be necessary). The starting material may be derived from the culture medium as in Specification 642,369 and is preferably a relatively pure sodium penicillin concentrate. This is acidified to pH 2-4 before or after the addition of the organic solvent, preferably using orthophosphoric acid, solvents, neutralizing and salting-out agents are specified as in Specification 642,369 and the details p of the process are substantially the same. Examples show the crystallization of the ammonium, potassium, sodium and rubidium salts from n-butanol, using sodium and potassium chlorides as salting-out agents. Salts of organic bases may also be prepared. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes a modification in which prior to concentrating and crystallizing, a second organic solvent is added and the initial solvent removed by distillation. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
