Abstract

DL-Homocysteic acid or the monoammonium last thereof is optically resolved by making and maintaining a supersaturated aqueous solution of the racemate or of the racemate and a small amount of optically active isomer, crystallizing an optically active isomer from the solution in the presence of crystals of optically active isomer and separating the crystals from the solution. After the crystals have been separated from the solution, more racemate or the other isomer is added thereto and this other isomer is then crystallized out and separated from the solution. Pure optically active homocysteic acid or the monoammonium salt thereof is obtained by dissolving optically active homocysteic acid which is contaminated with racemic acid in sufficient water, aqueous mineral acid, aqueous alkali or mixed solvent of water and a water-soluble organic solvent to dissolve the racemic component completely to form a solution which is at least substantially saturated with respect to the racemic component, and separating the optically active component remaining as a solid phase from the liquid phase.
