Abstract
Alkyl esters of acrylic acids are separated from their mixtures with one or more alcohols which are completely soluble in water by contacting the mixture with water or an aqueous solution of a salt and with a liquid hydrocarbon which is completely miscible with the ester to be separated, essentially insoluble in water and has a lower affinity than water for the alcohol from which the ester is to be separated to form an organic phase containing the ester and an aqueous phase containing the alcohol, and separating the phases. The alcohol and ester can be recovered from their respective phases by distillation. The hydrocarbon preferably has a boiling point above that of the ester. Aliphatic saturated hydrocarbons are preferred but unsaturated and also aromatic hydrocarbons are also specified. Salt concentrations within the range of about 3 to 25% by weight in the aqueous phase are mentioned. It is preferred to maintain the aqueous phase as the continuous phase. The process may be operated continuously.
