306,097. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Feb. 15, 1928, [Convention, date]. Addition to 300,923. Propionic, butyric, isobutyric, and other aliphatic acids other than acetic acid are concentrated by distilling with a halogenated hydrocarbon, which forms with water an azeotropic mixture of lower boiling-point than the acid, the added liquid being advantageously returned to the still until the water has been removed, after which the halogen compound is separated from the concentrated acid by distillation. In the examples, propionic acid is distilled with dichlorethylene, butyric acid with trichlorethylene, and isobutyric acid with chloroform. -
