Abstract
The concentration of aqueous aliphatic acids such as acetic, formic, and butyric acids is effected by means of isopropyl ether as an entraining agent for carrying off the water. The acid is distilled with the ether, or the vapour of the ether may be injected into the aqueous acid. The ether layer of the condensate is returned to the process continuously or intermittently.ALSO:The concentration of aqueous aliphatic acids, such as acetic, formic, and butyric acids, is effected by means of isopropyl ether which may be used as a solvent extraction agent or as an entraining agent for carrying off the water. When an extraction process is used, the water passes off with the first portions of the ether in the distillation of the extract. When the ether is used as an entraining agent, the acid is distilled with the ether or the vapour of the ether may be injected into the aqueous acid. The ether layer of the condensate is returned to the process continuously or intermittently.
