Abstract

Crude sheet rubber is purified by heating it under pressure at 110-200 DEG C. with an aqueous ammonium hydroxide solution containing at least 15 per cent ammonia and pref rably containing 28-29 per cent ammonia. This treatment is stated to remove the protein constituents of the rubber and to improve its under-water electrical insulating properties. Ammonia may be removed from the rubber by removing the rubber from the ammoniacal liquor, immersing it in water and distilling off the ammonia. Wetting agents may be added to the ammoniacal solution. Specifications 13570/09 and 9686/10, [both in Class 70], are referred to.
