Abstract

Formic acid is produced by treating a formate at low temperature with dilute nitric acid in the presence of a buffer substance such as a formate, urea, or an amine, and is separated by extraction or distillation. In examples, (1) calcium or potassium formate is treated with a deficiency of 62,7 per cent nitric acid at 6-7 DEG C., the formic acid being separated by vacuum distillation; (2) sodium formate is treated with a deficiency of 6,1 per cent nitric acid at ordinary temperature, the formic acid being separated by distillation.
