Abstract
299,487. Pollopas, Ltd., Baly, E. C. C., and Baly, E. J. June 24, 1927. Dimethylol urea.-Dimethylol urea is made by condensing urea with formaldehyde (preferably with a small excess of formaldehyde) in cold aqueous solution having a faintly alkaline reaction. The alkali concentration should not exceed that corresponding to 0.02 N caustic soda, since if that concentration is exceeded heat is evolved to such a degree that undesirable byproducts are formed. Alkaline buffer solutions mav be used to maintain the desired concentration. In an example, a mixture of urea with formaldehyde in 10 per cent excess, to which sufficient caustic soda has been added to give an alkalinity of 0.01 N, is stirred for 24 hours at 15-20‹ C. The product melts above 134‹ C., usually at 138-140‹ C. Specification 213,567 is referred to.
