Abstract
Cyanates of the alkali metals and of the metals of the second group of the periodic system having an atomic weight below 200 are prepared by converting ammonium cyanate with oxides or hydroxides of the said metals in monohydric aliphatic alcohols or liquid ammonia. Generally the temperature should not exceed 30-35 DEG C., but very low temperatures may be used. The presence of small amounts, say up to 10 per cent, of water is permissible, especially when using alcohols. When preparing alkaline-earth cyanates, the use of an excess of oxide renders harmless any water present or formed in the reaction. The cyanates can be worked up by known methods. Examples describe the preparation of the cyanates of sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, zinc, and cadmium.
