Abstract

316,399. Horsley, G. F., and Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd. June 29, 1928. Catalytic agents, preparation of; hydrogenated organic compounds, catalytic production of.- The catalytic hydrogenation of crotonaldehyde to butanol is effected by passing a mixture of the vapour and hydrogen, with or without steam, over a catalyst comprising copper and/or silver and at least one oxide or hydroxide of the metals iron, cobalt, nickel, zinc, calcium, strontium, barium, magnesium, divalent chromium, manganese., or over a mixture of copper and/or silver with iron and/or nickel containing iron and/or nickel oxide at a temperature below 300‹. The catalyst may be prepared by precipitating the oxides or hydroxides of copper or silver with the oxides or hydroxides of iron, cobalt, nickel, zinc, magnesium, chromium, manganese and reducing the mixture under conditions such that the copper or silver is wholly reduced and the other metal partly or not at all. The presence of mixed salts is avoided by adding the metal salt solution to an alkali solution instead of vice versa. According to an example crotonaldehyde vapour, steam and hydrogen are passed over a catalyst consisting of copper and nickel oxide at a temperature of 120‹.
