Abstract

275,345. Synthetic Ammonia & Nitrates, Ltd., and Smith, H. G. May 12,1926. Methanol, higher alcohols, and other oxygenated organic compounds are produced by interaction of carbon oxides and hydrogen at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of a catalyst comprising a basic zinc chromate of the composition 4ZnO.CrO3. This catalyst, which becomes reduced during the operation or may be reduced beforehand, effects the synthesis at low temperatures (300-400‹ C.), and is not poisoned by sulphur, though volatile compounds of iron, nickel and cobalt should be excluded. The basic zinc chromate is made by adding a slight excess of chromic acid to an aqueous suspension of zinc oxide or hydroxide, or by double decomposition of say zinc sulphate with sodium chromate. Except for the production of methanol, soluble alkali salts may be present in the material. Comparative experiments using a catalyst of varying composition of zinc and chromium oxides under standard reaction conditions are described. Specification 227,147 is referred to.
