Abstract
A zinc oxide catalyst for methanol synthesis is obtained by the thermal decomposition of an organic zinc salt whose melting point is lower than its decomposition point, e.g. zinc acetate. Other oxides which are not reduced in the conditions of use may be incorporated in the zinc oxide, preferably by addition of organic salts of the kind referred to. The decomposition may be effected under pressure and at the lowest possible temperature, and the product may be ground to a porous granular structure. Since the catalyst also favours the conversion of water gas, the synthesis gas may have an abnormally low hydrogen content, the deficiency being supplied by an addition of steam according to the equation 3CO + 3H2 + H2O = CO2 + 2CH3OH.ALSO:A zinc oxide catalyst for methanol synthesis is obtained by the thermal decomposition of an organic zinc salt whose melting point is lower than its decomposition point, e.g. zinc acetate. Other irreducible oxides preferably prepared by similar means may also be present. The catalyst also favours the water-gas reaction and thus permits the use of a synthesis gas of abnormally low hydrogen content with an addition of steam, according to the equation 3CO + 3H2 + H2O = CO2 + 2CH3OH.
