Abstract

338,854. Dreyfus, H. July 24, 1929. Oxygenated organic compounds such as ethanol, propyl alcohol, acetaldehyde, acetic acid, methyl acetate and their higher homologes, and ketones. are obtained from mixtures of hydrogen and oxides of carbon such as water gas, coke oven gas or producer gas in the presence of catalysts consisting of alkali or alkaline earth or copper silicates, borates or phosphates or salts of other oxyacids of phosphorus. The products vary according as the catalysts contain an excess of basic or acidic radicle over the normal content. In place of the above reactants, compounds obtainable by synthesis therefrom, such as methanol or ethanol, may be employed under pressure. They may be prepared prior to the main reaction by passing the gases over zinc oxide or basic zinc chromate. Compounds capable of yielding methanol such as methyl formate or acetate or dimethyl ether may alternatively be employed. Temperatures of 200-600‹ C., and especially 250-400‹ C., and pressures of 50-500 atmospheres or more are preferably used. Methane or inert gases such as nitrogen may be present. Reaction chambers of copper or steel lined therewith, or of steel containing molybdenum, tungsten, manganese, cobalt, or nickel are conveniently employed.
