Abstract
Ethanol is produced by reacting at a pressure of at least 4000 p.s.i. gauge but not in excess of a pressure at which glycol ethers are formed (15000 p.s.i.), between 175 DEG to 210 DEG C., methanol, carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a reaction mixture soluble cobalt catalyst and iodine as promoter, the ratios of reactants being maintained at 0.33 to 0.01 grams cobalt metal per mole of methanol, 0.06 to 0.001 grams iodine per mole of methanol and the molar ratio of hydrogen to carbon monoxide from 4 to 1 to 1 to 2. The preferred conditions are 190 DEG to 205 DEG C., 5000 to 12000 p.s.i. gauge, 0.25 to 0.10 grams cobalt metal per mole of methanol, 0.02 to 0.03 grams iodine per mole of methanol, 2 moles hydrogen to 1 mole of carbon monoxide. Specified cobalt catalysts include the carbonyls, and C1 to C5 cobalt alkanoates. The examples state that very small amounts of by products are formed.
