Abstract
274,492. Compagnie de Bethune. July 17, 1926, [Convention date]. Methanol and other alcohols.-The synthesis of alcohols, particularly methyl alcohol, by the interaction of carbon monoxide and hydrogen at elevated temperature and pressure is effected with catalysts prepared by depositing the formates of metals giving irreducible oxides upon a porous support, such as pumice, asbestos, charcoal and activated carbon. Uranium, tungsten, vanadium, zinc, glucinum, chromium and titanium are specified as suitable metals. According to the examples, active carbon is heated to redness, immersed in a solution of zinc formate or a mixture of zinc and chromium formates, and the solution evaporated to dryness. The yields obtained by the use of these catalysts under certain conditions are contrasted with that obtained by the aid of a dried paste of zinc oxide mounted upon pumice. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), refers generally to soluble salts of metals giving irreducible oxides. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
