Abstract

Iron oxide, for use as a catalyst in the production of hydrocarbons and/or oxygenated hydrocarbons from gases comprising carbon monoxide and hydrogen and/or steam at elevated temperature and pressure, is activated by heating it at a pressure of one to two atmospheres in a reducing gas containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the ratio of 0,55 to 0,75 parts by volume of hydrogen per part by volume of carbon monoxide. The carbon monoxide and hydrogen together may comprise 90 to 99% by volume of the gas. The catalyst may be heated at 10 DEG to 50 DEG C. higher than the production temperature, e.g. at 260 DEG to 310 DEG C., and for 15 to 20 hours. The catalyst may be slurried in a melted wax derived from a Fischer-Tropsch syntheses and may be heated in the reactor used for the production. The catalyst may consist of precipitated ferric oxide and may contain minor amounts of cupric oxide and potassium oxide, hydroxide or carbonate. Examples are given.ALSO:In the production of hydrocarbons and/or oxygenated hydrocarbons from gases comprising carbon monoxide and hydrogen and/or steam at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of an iron oxide catalyst, the catalyst is activated by heating it at a pressure of one or two atmospheres in a reducing gas containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the ratio of 0.55 to 0.75 parts by volume of hydrogen per part by volume of carbon monoxide. The carbon monoxide and hydrogen together may comprise 90 to 99% by volume of the gas. The catalyst may be heated at 10 DEG to 50 DEG C. higher than the production temperature, e.g. at 260 DEG to 310 DEG C., and for 15 to 20 hours.
