290,399. Synthetic Ammonia & Nitrates, Ltd., and Franklin, R. G. Nov. 15, 1926. Methyl and higher alcohols; oxygenated organic compounds; catalytic agents, preparation of.-Catalysts for the production of methanol and other oxygenated organic compounds from carbon monoxide and hydrogen are prepared by heating a mixture comprising zinc carbonate or basic zinc carbonate and a chromium compound, which may be zinc chromate or basic zinc chromate. When zinc chromates are employed, the heating takes place in the presence of hydrogen or the reacting gases. The preferred catalyst has a zinc-chromium ratio of 9: 1. Examples are given of the preparation of catalysts by (1) boiling zinc sulphate solution with sodium carbonate, digesting the washed precipitate of basic zinc carbonate with chromic acid, and the product then filtered, dried and granulated; a carrier such as pumice or asbestos may be present; (2) heating an aqueous solution of zinc sulphate with sodium carbonate and sodium bichromate, washing and drying the precipitate; a soluble chromate may replace the bichromate. In either case, if the catalyst is allowed to retain some alkali salt, it is useful for the synthesis of higher alcohols and other oxygenated organic compounds.
