Abstract

In the preparation of chlorites from chlorine dioxide in an alkaline medium, the action is accelerated by the use of compounds of silver, nickel, manganese, copper, cobalt, mercury, iron or gold, or of the metals themselves, or of active carbon, or of combinations of them, as a catalyst in solution or in a finely divided condition and in an amount which is smaller than a quarter of the amount of chlorine dioxide converted. Reducing agents other than the compounds referred to above, and other than ammonia, a derivative of ammonia and substances capable of yielding ammonia or a derivative of ammonia, e.g. sodium formate, may also be added. The amount of catalyst employed may range down to a few tens of milligrams per litre of liquid treated. Reference is made to the treatment with chlorine dioxide of ammonia and caustic soda solutions and of lime and magnesium hydroxide suspensions. Specifications 460,374, 460,375 and 495,289 are referred to.
