Abstract

A commercial paraformaldehyde is produced by blending alpha-polyoxymethylene with paraformaldehyde in such proportions that the blend will assay more than 95 per cent formaldehyde. The process may consist of vacuum concentrating an aqueous solution of formaldehyde to recover a paraformaldehyde assaying from about 92 to 94 per cent formaldehyde and then blending the paraformaldehyde thus obtained with the alpha-polyoxymethylene to yield the desired blend having an assay of more than 95 per cent formaldehyde. A table is given showing comparable data as to rate of solubility and reactivity of paraformaldehyde produced according to the invention and paraformaldehydes of similar formaldehyde assay produced by existing processes. The reactivity tests used are described. Alpha - polyoxymethylene may be prepared by precipitation from an aqueous formaldehyde solution by caustic alkali or sulphuric acid treatment.
