Abstract

Symmetrical trihydroxy-benzene compounds are obtained by the action of finely-divided iron and a strong non-oxidizing mineral acid in sufficient excess to give a specified free acidity, on sym.-trinitrobenzene compounds, followed by decreasing the acidity, and hydrolysing the product. In examples, sym.-trinitrobenzoic acid, 2 : 4 : 6 - trinitrotoluene, picric acid, and trinitroanisole, are treated as described to give phloroglucinol, tetrahydroxybenzene, or 2-methoxyphloroglucinol. Other products obtainable by the process include 2-hexyl-, 2-propyl-, 2-isopropyl-, 2-butyl-, and 2-cyclohexyl-phloroglucinol. The carboxylic group, if present, is eliminated during the reaction.
