Abstract

Casein is dissolved or made into a paste in water to which is added a casein solvent such as an alkali, sodium or ammonium chloride, hydrochloric or acetic acid. The solution or paste is heated to 90 DEG -180 DEG F. and a precipitant is added according to the solvent acid, whereupon a rubber-like mass separates. The mass is pressed between wet cloths for about 6 hours, and is then moulded, and placed on absorbent material for 2-10 days to drain. The articles are then immersed for 2 days-3 weeks in a mixture consisting of 45 per cent of distilled water, 45 per cent of a formaldehyde solution of 40 per cent strength, and 10 per cent of glycerine, and are finally dried at about 65 DEG F.ALSO:Casein is dissolved or made into a paste in water to which is added a casein solvent such as an alkali, sodium or ammonium fluoride, hydrochloric or acetic acid. The solution or paste is heated and a precipitant is added according to the solvent used, whereupon a rubber-like mass separates. The mass is pressed between wet cloths, and is then moulded, and placed on absorbent material to drain. The articles are then immersed in a hardening mixture consisting of distilled water, formaldehyde solution and glycerine, and finally dried.
