Abstract

An albuminous substance for use in tanning is obtained by the acid hydrolysis of leather scraps until the product has a content of nitrogen of which at least ten per cent is titratable with formaldehyde. The scraps freed from lime by hydrochloric acid are dried and then treated with sulphuric acid under a reflux condenser for 5 to 6 hours. The acid is neutralized with lime and the material boiled with sodium carbonate. After filtration the product is concentrated in vacuo to a viscous mass containing 16 per cent nitrogen. The method of titration with the use of formaldehyde is briefly described in the Specification. Specification 200,262, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], is referred to.
