Abstract

Trimethylenetrinitramine is manufactured by introducing dry hexamethylenetetramine dinitrate (obtainable by bubbling ammonia through a saturated solution of formaldehyde with suitable cooling, acidifying with nitric acid, filtering and drying the product) into about seven times its weight of a concentrated solution of nitric acid, the operation being effected in two stages during the first of which the temperature is maintained low (0-15 DEG C.) while during the second it rises to about 30 DEG C. Part of the trimethylenetrinitramine may be separated by cooling and the residual solution then distilled under reduced pressure at a temperature not exceeding 40 DEG C. to recover nitric acid which may be used again. A second amount of trimethylenetrinitramine may then be separated by cooling and a second distillation of nitric acid carried out until such an amount of nitric acid remains as is required for producing hexamethylenetetramine dinitrate for a second nitration, for which purpose it is used after dilution and separation of the remaining trimethylenetrinitramine. The formaldehyde formed in the reaction and contained in the washing waters of the hexamethylenetetramine dinitrate may be recovered therefrom by neutralization, e.g. with calcium carbonate and distillation in vacuo, and used for the production of fresh hexamethylenetetramine dinitrate.
