Abstract
The silver salt of sulphonated castor oil is manufactured by sulphonating castor oil by the action of concentrated sulphuric acid in the cold, converting the product into its sodium salt by the addition of an alkaline sodium salt such as sodium carbonate, removing excess of sodium salt by the addition of alcohol and precipitating the silver salt by adding excess silver nitrate solution to the alcoholic solution obtained.ALSO:An ethylene diamine derivative of the silver salt of sulphonated castor oil is manufactured from the washed and dried silver salt of sulphonated castor oil by the addition of ethylene diamine and the combination under pressure in an autoclave. In an example, castor oil is sulphonated by the action of concentrated sulphuric acid in the cold, the product is converted into its sodium salt by the addition of an alkaline sodium salt such as sodium carbonate and excess sodium salt is removed by the addition of alcohol. To the alcoholic solution is added excess silver nitrate solution, producing a precipitate of the silver salt of sulphonated castor oil, which is washed, dried, analysed to determine the silver content, mixed with water and heated with ethylene diamine under pressure in an autoclave, producing a reddish brown liquid. This is diluted to a silver content of .018 grams per c.c., the resulting solution being allowed to stand several days, after which it is tested and then diluted to produce 2 per cent solutions which are sealed in ampoules and may be employed for hypodermic injections.
