Abstract

Readily soluble solid formaldehyde is obtained by concentrating solutions of formaldehyde having an acidity not greater than 0,01 per cent calculated as formic acid. The solutions may be made by distilling off a part of the formaldehyde from a commercial 30--35 per cent formaldehyde to which acid-fixing agents may be added, the distillate having the desired low acid content. Preferably the acid content is from 0,005 to 0,006 per cent; such a solution when concentrated to 80 per cent solidifies on cooling, but further drying may be effected preferably at low temperatures in a good vacuum for instance to 95 per cent strength.
