Abstract

Complex water-soluble compounds of therapeutic value are obtained by reacting one molecular proportion of equimolecular theophylline-ethylenediamine, or its components, with not more than one-fifth of a molecular proportion of a C : C- di- or C : C : N-trisubstituted barbituric acid. The reaction may be effected by rubbing up the constituents, if desired with the addition of water or an alcohol as solvent. Examples are given of the interaction of (1) theophylline monohydrate (1 mol), 5 : 5-phenylethyl-barbituric acid (\ba1/10\be mol) and ethylenediamine hydrate (1 mol) in water; (2) theophylline-ethylenediamine monohydrate (1 mol) and 5 : 5-phenylethylbarbituric acid (\ba1/10\be mol) in water; (3) theophylline monohydrate (1 mol), 5 : 5-phenylethyl-barbituric acid (\ba1/7\be mol) and ethylenediamine hydrate (1 mol) in alcohol; (4) theophylline monohydrate (1 mol), C : C-diethylbarbituric acid (\ba1/5\be mol) and ethylenediamine hydrate (1 mol) in alcohol; following by drying in vacuo in each case. Other barbituric acids mentioned are C : C-isopropyl-b -bromallyl-, diallyl-, isopropylallyl-, phenylallyl-, and D <1\1.2>-cyclohexenylethyl-barbituric acids and C : C-phenylethyl-N-methyl-barbituric acid.
