Abstract

An aromatic hydroxyl compound, substituted in the nucleus with at least one aliphatic radicle of more than four carbon atoms (or, according to the Provisional Specification, more than three carbon atoms), is sulphonated, and the product is then condensed with an aldehyde. The products so obtained are useful in acid solution as tanning agents; their water-soluble salts are useful as wetting, dispersing and cleansing agents. Specified aromatic compounds for use as starting materials are p-isohexylphenol, p - isooctylphenol, p - n - dodecylphenol, p - n - octadecylphenol, and isooctylnaphthol. The sulphonation may be effected with sulphuric acid, oleum or chlorsulphonic acid at 60--150 DEG C., and the condensation with an aldehyde may be effected in diluted acid solution at a temperature up to 100 DEG C. In the examples: (1) p - isohexylphenol is sulphonated and the product is treated with formaldehyde; (2) p-isooctylphenol is sulphonated and the product is treated with acetaldehyde; (3) p-n-dodecylphenol is sulphonated and the product is treated with crotonaldehyde. The water-soluble salts of the products so obtained are useful as dispersing agents. In the examples: (1) p-isohexylphenol is sulphonated and the product is treated with formaldehyde; (2) p-isooctylphenol is sulphonated and the product is treated with acetaldehyde; (3) p-n-dodecylphenol is sulphonated and the product is treated with crotonaldehyde.
