Abstract

Products useful as tanning - agents are obtained by treating diphenyl or a derivative thereof with a sulphonating agent. The tanning action of the products may be increased by treating the diphenyl compound, before, during or after the sulphonation, with an agent having a condensing action or capable of enlarging the molecule, for instance with an aldehyde or ketone or a compound which reacts in the same way. In the examples: (1) p-hydroxydiphenyl is sulphonated with sulphuric acid monohydrate; (2) the sulphonation product of example 1 is diluted and heated with formaldehyde solution; (3) diphenyl is sulphonated with oleum, and the mass is warmed with formaldehyde solution; (4) 4 : 4<1>-dihydroxydiphenyl is sulphonated with sulphuric acid, and the mixture is warmed with methylolurea; (5) a , a -dinaphthyl is treated with chlorosulphonic acid and the product is condensed with benzaldehyde; (6) a mixture of p-hydroxydiphenyl and butyl alcohol is sulphonated with oleum; (7) diphenyl is sulphonated with oleum, and the mixture is treated in turn with benzyl chloride and glyoxal. Reference is made also to the sulphonation of o-hydroxydiphenyl and of a condensation product of p-hydroxydiphenyl with formaldehyde.
