Abstract
Isopropyl acetate is produced by reacting isopropyl sulphuric acid with aqueous acetic acid and then distilling off the isopropyl acetate under a pressure below 600 mm. The reaction may be effected with acetic acid of 60-880 per cent, at 50--120 DEG C. and the ester may be distilled off at 3--300 mm. pressure. The reaction may be effected at atmospheric or reduced pressure, and there may be a throttle valve between the reaction vessel and the still, or the difference of pressure may be effected by a difference of level. The reaction vessel may be provided with filler bodies, and the process may be continuous. In an example, a mixture of isopropyl sulphuric acid and 80 per cent acetic acid is led through a reaction chamber at 80 DEG C. and a column provided with filler bodies, the still being kept at 200 DEG C. and 300 mm. pressure. The distillate is rectified to separate an azeotropic mixture of isopropyl acetate and water from acetic acid.
