Abstract

Isoprene is prepared by isomerizing a branched chain hexene which is not an isoprene precursor to an isoprene precursor and pyrolysing. The isoprene precursors are those hexenes which on pyrolysis yield isoprene as the major component of the product particularly 2-methyl pentene-2, 3-methyl pentene-2, 2,3-dimethyl butene-1, and 2-ethyl butene-1. The starting hexene may be, for example, 2,3-dimethyl-butene - 2, 2 - methylpentene - 1, 3 - methylpentene-1, 4 - methylpentene - 1 or 4 - methylpentene-2 and may be prepared by polymerization of propylene or copolymerization of ethylene and butene. Suitable polymerization catalysts are the organo-compounds of aluminium, beryllium, gallium or indium, or lithiumaluminium hydride or alkyls, sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid (which may be supported on kieselguhr), silica-alumina, nickel oxide-silica alumina, molybdena-alumina, chromia-alumina, and tungsten oxide on alumina or silica-alumina. Temperatures of 25-450 DEG C. and an LHSV. of 0.5-10 can be used. The product hexenes are isomerized over alumina, silica-alumina, nickel, acidified alumina, acidified clay, alumina-hydrofluoric acid, perchloric acid, phosphoric acid, sulphuric acid, or alkyl-, aryl- or aralkyl-sulphonic acids. Temperatures may be - 50 DEG to 700 DEG C. with an LHSV. of 0.5-20 and a pressure of 1 mm.-3 atmospheres. Pyrolysis of the isoprene precursors may be effected in the presence of steam at 550-1000 DEG C. for 0.001-2 seconds.
