Abstract

1,196,889. Oligomerizing olefins. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSSCHAPPIJ, N.V. 8 April, 1969 [9 April, 1968 (2)], No. 17880/69. Heading C5E. [Also in Division B1] Mono-olefins are oligomerized by contact with a heterogeneous catalyst comprising a reduced nickelocene and a solid inorganic support. The catalyst may be made either by contacting the support with nickelocene in the presence of hydrogen, or by applying #-cyclopentenyl-#-cyclopentadienyl-nickel directly to the support. Many suitable supports are listed. In examples ethylene, propylene and 1-butene are oligomerized, the supports being silica/ alumina (25% Al 2 O 3 ), tungstic oxide/alumina (10% or 12% WO 3 ) or silica/alumina/tungstic oxide (10% WO 3 ). The products contain higher proportions of trimers and tetramers than using a comparative catalyst in which the nickelocene is not reduced, but the main single oligomer product is the dimer.
