Abstract
1,171,970. Separating olefins. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 28 Oct., 1968 [15 Nov., 1967], No. 51949/67. Heading C5E. Mixtures of branched and unbranched olefins are separated by contact with a disproportionation catalyst to effect oligomerization of the branched olefin, the oligomer then being separated. At least some of the unbranched olefin may be disproportionated. Suitable catalysts are oxides of Re, Mo and W supported on Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 and/or MgO; preferred is a mixture of CoO and MoO 3 on Al 2 O 3 . The process is particularly suitable for separating isobutene from butene-1 and/or butene-2 (diisobutene being separated as such from other oligomers), and the separation of isobutene from propylene is also exemplified. After the above process the remaining olefins may be dimerized, or (preferably after removal of any ethylene and propylene) disproportionated, in either case to obtain a C 6-8 olefine feedstock for the oxo process.
