Abstract
1,146,274. Dimerizing olefins. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 17 March, 1967 [29 March, 1966], No. 13860/66. Heading C5E. A mixture of dimers and co-dimers is produced by contacting propylene and a butene (i.e. butene-1, butene-2, isobutene or any mixture thereof) with a catalyst comprising a Group VIII metal or a compound thereof supported on silica, silica gel, alumina, silica/alumina or active carbon. Preferred catalysts are nickel oxide on silica/alumina and cobalt/cobalt oxide on active carbon. The process may be carried out at 20-140‹ C., in the liquid phase if desired, and a solvent may be present, e.g. pentane. The starting material is preferably substantially free from butadiene, methyl acetylene and allene, the effect of the presence of these impurities being shown in comparative examples in which propylene is dimerized alone.
