Abstract

1,161,532. Dimerizing olefins. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 28 Feb., 1968 [6 March, 1967], No. 10462/67. Heading C5E. Olefins are dimerized or co-dimerized in contact with a catalyst containing a compound of nickel or cobalt on an oxide support and a noble metal of Group VIII. Oxides sulphates or halides of Ni or Co may be supported on SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , ZrO 2 , B 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , MgO or mixtures thereof. The Group VIII noble metal is preferably Pt or Pd, in amount 0À01-5% by wt., and may be carried on the same support as the Ni or Co compound. The dimerization may be carried out at temperatures up to 140‹ C. in a liquid phase provided by the starting olefin, the product or a paraffinic solvent. A small amount of hydrogen may be present. Examples describe the co-dimerization of propylene and butene-2.
