Abstract
A catalyst comprising P.T.F.E. and (1) one or more copper oxides with one or more chromium oxides, or (2) tungsten oxide is used in the hydration of olefines. The P.T.F.E. may form 1-5% of the catalyst and have a molecular weight of 500,000-5,000,000. The metallic oxides may be introduced into the catalyst by way of precursors, e.g. H2WO4, Cu(NO3)2 an H2CrO4. Examples are given.ALSO:Olefines, e.g. ethylene, propylene, butenes, pentenes, hexenes, heptenes, octenes, and nonenes are hydrated to corresponding alcohols by using a catalyst comprising P.T.F.E. (polytetrafluoroethylene) and one or more copper oxides with one or more chromium oxides or tungsten oxide. In examples propylene is hydrated to isopropanol using P.T.F.E. and WO3 pellets at 250 DEG C. and 250 atmospheres. The hydration of butene-1 and butene-2 to sec. butanol is also described.
