Abstract

C6-C8 olefins are produced by co-oligomerizing an n-butene fraction consisting predominantly of butene-1 with ethylene over a cobalt/activated carbon catalyst, said catalyst being activated by heating at temperatures below 350 DEG C. The reaction may be carried out in the liquid phase, possibly in the presence of a solvent which may be the reaction product. Reaction temperatures of -50-200 DEG C. and pressures of 100-1000 p.s.i.g. are specified. The reaction product may be fractionated to yield butene at least part of which may be recycled. The butene fraction may be obtained by simultaneous oligomerization of ethylene.
