Abstract
Dimers of olefines containing the group -CH=CH2 or isomerisable to such an olefine under the reaction conditions are formed by passing the olefine together with an organo-aluminium compound at more than 50 DEG C. continuously through a reactor at a linear velocity greater than V where <FORM:0876680/IV (b)/1> where D=diameter of reactor m =absolute viscosity of the reacting mixture at 20 DEG C. and r =density of the reacting mixture at 20 DEG C. The olefine may be ethylene, propylene, butene-1, butene-2, pentenes and hexenes or mixtures thereof; nickel may be added to catalyse the isomerisation of olefines not containing the -CH=CH2 group. Pressures above 150 atmospheres are preferred, and an inert hydrocarbon diluent may be present. Aluminium trialkyls are the preferred catalysts. Specification 853,187 is referred to.
