Abstract
A polymerization catalyst is made by admixing a compound of the formula ZmR2 where R is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical, and at least one R is a hydrocarbon radical, with chromium oxide supported on at least one oxide selected from silica, alumina, or thoria. The amount of the zinc compound is 0.1 to 15 weight per cent based on the weight of the supported chromium oxide. The catalyst, optionally in the presence of a hydrocarbon medium, is used to polymerize ethylene alone or in admixture with minor amounts of other olefins such as propylene, 1-butene, 2-butene, isobutylene, 1-pentene, 1-hexene, 4-methyl -1- pentene, 1-octene, 1-decene, or 1-dodecene. The polymerization may be conducted in the gaseous phase, and at a temperature in the range of 100 to 500 DEG F. The Specification lists many suitable zinc compounds of which diethyl and dibutyl zinc are exemplified. U.S.A. Specification 2,944,049 is referred to.
