Abstract
Halide-alkoxide double salts of Friedel Crafts metals are used as catalysts for polymerizing olefines, the formula being either (MZ)a.-M1(OR) or (MZ)a.M1O(OR) where Z is halogen, R an alkyl radical, and an integer up to 20. M or M1 may be the same or different metals, titanium, aluminium, zirconium, boron, vanadium, uranium, and silicon being mentioned. Typical examples are (Al Cl3)2. TiOC4H9 and TiBr4.TiO(OC2H5)2. The alkoxides may be made by reaction between a halide and an alcohol, and then ground with a halide to form the double salt.ALSO:A catalyst for the low-temperature polymerization of mono-olefines, or mixtures of mono-olefines and polyolefines comprises a halide-alkoxide double salt of one or more Friedel Crafts metals, the formula being either (MZ)a.M1(OR) or (MZ)a.M1O(OR) where Z is a halogen, R an alkyl radical, and a an integer from 1 to 20. M and M1 may be the same or different metals, titanium, aluminium, zirconium, boron, vanadium, uranium, and silicon being mentioned. Typical examples are (AlCl3)2.TiOC4H9 and TiBr4.TiO(OC2H5)2. The catalyst may be used in an inert solvent, e.g. a paraffin with up to 10 carbon atoms or a mono-or poly-alkyl halide with up to 10 carbon atoms. Examples describe the polymerization of isobutylene and of isobutylene-isoprene mixtures containing 1 and 3 per cent of isoprene.
