Abstract

1,148,966. Oligomerizing propylene ; alkylation. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 28 July, 1967 [4 Aug., 1966], No. 34853/67. Heading CSE. High molecular weight oligomers (e.g. averaging C 24 or higher) are prepared by contacting propylene containing 0À04-0À07 weight per cent water (relative to the propylene) with anhydrous BF 3 catalyst under conditions of temperature and pressure such that the propylene and catalyst are both liquid and are miscible with the oligomer formed, the weight ratio of water to BF 3 being not more than 0À14. The ratio BF 3 : propylene may be 0À5-0À8 weight per cent. The oligomers so prepared may be used to alkylate benzene, toluene or o-xylene in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, e.g. AlCl 3 .
