Abstract

1,181,473. 3,4,5-Trimethyl-1-sec alkylbenzenes; 1,2,3-trimethylbenzene. MARATHON OIL CO. 7 May, 1968, No. 21577/68. Heading C5E. 3,4,5-Trimethyl-1-sec alkylbenzenes are prepared from 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene by a process comprising secondary alkylation of 1,2,4- trimethylbenzene in the presence of a strong, substantially anhydrous Friedel-Crafts catalyst and concurrent isomerization of the alkylated product. The secondary alkylation may comprise the introduction of isopropyl, isobutyl or isohexyl groups into the 1,2,4-trimethyl benzene by using either olefins or alkyl halides. The Friedel-Crafts catalyst may be AlCl 3 /HCl, AlBr 3 /HBr or BF 3 complexed with H 3 PO 4 , H 2 SO 4 , phenol or HF. An inert reaction medium such as CS 2 , fluorocarbon, paraffin or cycloparaffin may be employed for the alkylation-isomerization reaction. An example describes the preparation of 3,4,5-trimethyl-1- isopropylbenzene from 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene and isopropyl chloride in CS 2 using an AlCl 3 catalyst. The 3,4,5-trimethyl-1-sec alkylbenzene products may be dealkylated at 200-400‹ C. using SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 /B 2 O 3 , Al 2 O 3 activated with fluoride ion, or bauxite as catalyst to give 1,2,3-trimethylbenzene.
