Abstract

1,132,859. Alkylating benzene; isomerizing alpha-olefins. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 29 Nov., 1965 [27 Nov., 1964], No. 50573/65. Heading C5E. Benzene is alkylated with C 10-15 olefins or alkyl chlorides in the presence of a crystalline molecular sieve which is capable of absorbing benzene, has a silica to alumina ratio of at least 3À0, and has no more than 90% of its aluminium atoms associated with monovalent cations. Suitable sieves are zeolites L and Y, which may be used in conjunction with up to 95 wt. per cent of a silica/alumina composite. The cations of the sieve may be at least partly exchanged with various proportions of other cations, particularly polyvalent cations (e.g. Ba, Mg, Ca, Cd, Ni, Ce or Co), and may be at least partly decationized. It may be used in the form of a powder or agglomerate, preferably as pellets, and may contain additives in order to assist the pelleting. The alkylating agent may be a random mixture of C 10-15 monochloro - n - alkanes, or a random olefin mixture obtained therefrom by dehydrohalogenation. The amount of terminal chloride or olefin in such mixtures is preferably kept to a minimum, and for this purpose alpha-olefins may be isomerized to internal olefins by contact with metallic sodium, palladium or palladium chloride or potassium tertbutoxide. In examples, the alkylating agent is a random monochlorododecane or a random dodecene. The alkylation products have low contents of the undesirable 2-phenyl isomers. For comparative purposes some of the examples also refer to the alkylation of benzene with random n-heptyl chlorides.
