Abstract

2-Phenyl dodecane is prepared by reacting acetophenone with n-1-decyl magnesium bromide, hydrolysing the product, dehydrating the alcohol so produced to yield 2-phenyl dodecane, and hydrogenating the latter. The hydrogenated product is fractionally distilled in a spinning band column and the distillate is passed through silica gel. 2-Phenyldodecane and other 2-phenyl normal alkanes containing 10-16 carbon atoms in the alkane chain may also be prepared by condensing benzene with normal 1-olefines containing 10-16 carbon atoms under relatively mild conditions. The products may be sulphonated and the sulphonated products used in detergent compositions in combination with the sulphonated mono-phenyl-substituted acyclic propylene polymers of Specification 645,129 (see Group III). Such compositions may also be prepared by sulphonating a mixture of mono-phenyl substituted C9-C18 propylene polymers with one or more 2-phenyl normal alkanes containing 10-16 carbon atoms in the alkane chain.ALSO:A detergent composition which is substantially non-caking comprises (1) a water-soluble inorganic salt of a mixture of sulphonated monophenyl-substituted acyclic propylene polymers having from 9 to 18 and preferably 12 to 15 carbon atoms in the polymer chain, and (2) at least 20 per cent. by weight, based on the total sulphonates in the composition, of a water-soluble salt, with the same inorganic cation, of a sulphonated 2-phenyl normal alkane with from 10 to 16 and preferably 12 to 14 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain. The proportion of the latter sulphonate is preferably between 25 and 60 per cent. by weight of the total sulphonates, but may be as high as 95 per cent. The compositions may contain the above mixture of sulphonates and from 40 to 85 per cent. by weight of inorganic builders such as sodium sulphate, sodium tetrapyrophosphate and sodium tripolyphosphate. The inorganic cations of the sulphonates may be sodium, potassium, lithium, ammonium or alkaline-earth metal cations. The production of the sulphonated monophenyl substituted propylene polymers is described in Specification 645, 129. The preferred sulphonated 2-phenyl alkane is sodium 2-phenyl dodecane sulphonate (see Group IV (b)) Examples are given.
