Abstract
Polymers of ethylene, and copolymers of ethylene and another 1-olefin, are made by first contacting the monomeric material with a chromium oxide polymerization catalyst in which at least a portion of the chromium is in the hexavalent state, in the presence of a liquid hydrocarbon diluent, and at a temperature below the temperature at which the polymer formed dissolves in the diluent, and secondly, contacting the particulate polymer and additional monomeric material to a further polymerization reaction at a temperature such that substantially all the polymer formed is soluble in the diluent, and recovering the polymer. The polymer and diluent are recovered by conventional methods. The 1-olefin may be propylene, 1-butene, isobutylene, 1-pentene, 1-hexene, 4-methyl-1-pentene, and 1-octene. The whole polymerization is preferably effected in a continuous manner by using a loop-shaped reactor, and a flow diagram of such a process is included in the Specification.
