Abstract
Ethylene, with or without another unsaturated hydrocarbon, is polymerized by contacting with a chromium oxide catalyst in a hydrocarbon diluent at a temperature such that the polymer is produced as insoluble, solid particles, the process being characterized in that the catalyst, diluent, monomer and polymer flow in a smooth, closed continuous path at a velocity in the highly turbulent flow range, i.e. a velocity sufficient to prevent polymer deposition with fouling of reactor. Monomers specified for copolymerizing with ethylene are propylene, butene, pentene, hexene and conjugated and non-conjugated diolefins. The chromium oxide catalyst may be associated with silica, alumina, zirconia or thoria. Apparatus for effecting the process is described and typical flow velocities are specified. Specifications 790,195 and 804,641 are referred to.
