Abstract

Ethylene, with or without another unsaturated hydrocarbon, is polymerized by contacting with a chromium oxide catalyst in a hydrocarbon diluent at a temperature such that the polymer is produced as insoluble, solid particles, the process being characterized in that the catalyst, diluent, monomer and polymer flow in a smooth, closed continuous path at a velocity in the highly turbulent flow range, i.e. a velocity sufficient to prevent polymer deposition with fouling of reactor. Monomers specified for copolymerizing with ethylene are propylene, butene, pentene, hexene and conjugated and non-conjugated diolefins. The chromium oxide catalyst may be associated with silica, alumina, zirconia or thoria. Apparatus for effecting the process is described and typical flow velocities are specified.
