Abstract
Poly-4-methylpentene-(1) is made by polymerizing a mixture of 4-methypentene-(1) and at least one other hexene in the presence of a catalyst comprising (1) a compound obtained from the reaction of a compound of a transition metal of Group IV, V, or VI, of the Mendel<\>aeeff Periodic Table with an organometal compound of a metal of Group II, or III of the Mendel<\>aeeff Periodic Table and (2) a halogencontaining organo-aluminium compound. The polymerization may be effected in the presence of an inert hydrocarbon dispersing medium. Alternatively the isomeric hexenes may act as the dispersing medium. Mixtures of the hexenes may be obtained by the dehydration of methylisobutylcarbinol with gamma-aluminium oxide at a temperature of from 220 DEG to 300 DEG C., or by the dimerization of propylene, or the trimerization of ethylene. Component (1) of the catalyst is preferably made by reacting TiCl4 with monoethyl-aluminium dichloride or diethyl-aluminium monochloride. Component (2) of the catalyst is generally diethyl-aluminium monochloride. The poly-4-methylpentene-(1) is mainly isotactic in structure and has a density within the range of from 0,82 to 0,86, an X-ray crystallinity of from 10 to 90% and a melting temperature of from 210 DEG to 260 DEG C.
